Flu Vaccinations

Flu Vaccination Campaign (2010)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an annual flu vaccination in the fall is the single best way to prevent seasonal flu. Worksites play an important role in preventing and controlling flu, and providing an onsite seasonal flu shot clinic is a proven way to prevent individual cases and the spread of seasonal flu. Washington Wellness works with PEBB-participating health plans to improve access to flu shots at worksite clinics. Routine influenza vaccination is recommended for all persons aged ≥6 months. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season.

Implementation

Hosting a seasonal flu shot clinic at the worksite is a cost-effective preventive health intervention that employers can provide for employees. More employees get seasonal flu shots when clinics are offered at the worksite than if they are encouraged to get them on their own. However, if you are not offering a seasonal flu shot clinic onsite, encouraging employees to get a flu shot by using their health plan benefits is recommended. Washington Wellness recommends using an overall campaign encouraging employees to get vaccinated, wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when ill or caring for ill family members.

Flu Vaccination Campaign (2009)

Studies show that vaccinating adults results in fewer missed work days and fewer physician office visits, for all employees, but particularly for employees and family members with existing chronic health conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most effective way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. This year in particular is unusual due to the Novel H1N1l virus (swine flu) and seasonal flu vaccine demand is higher than in previous years.

Implementation

One of the most cost-effective measures that employers can take to improve productivity and protect employee health is to provide onsite flu clinics, provide resources about where to access flu vaccinations in the community, and encourage flu vaccinations and healthy practices.

Flu Vaccination Campaign (2007)

Studies show that vaccinating adults results in fewer missed work days and fewer physician office visits, particularly for employees and family members with existing chronic health conditions. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most effective way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year.

Washington Wellness has convened a team of technical experts from the Department of Health, Uniform Medical Plan, and Group Health to develop strategies that meet short- and long-term employee flu vaccination goals. The short-term goal (2007-08) is to encourage all state employees to get a flu shot at work (if available) or an alternate site. The long-term goal is to identify “best practices,” and develop a step-by-step guide to flu vaccination clinic planning for wellness coordinators to implement beginning Fall 2008.
